After discovering volleyball as a student in Toronto, DeRocco quickly emerged as one of Canada's top athletes, earning national team selection and helping Canada capture its first international volleyball championship at the 1978 NORCECA Junior Championships. He later became one of the country's earliest professional volleyball success stories, winning league and European titles in Italy while helping establish a pathway for future Canadian athletes abroad.
